Working with People Experiencing Substance Misuse

Using real life case studies and visual recordings, people from Stoke on Trent tell their stories, share their history, inform and educate.
The aim of this session is for you to successfully work with customers who misuse alcohol or use drugs (legal and / or illegal) ensuring that the customer is supported, appropriately challenged and inspired to make positive changes.
By the end of the day’s training, you will have:
Recognised the cause and effect of drug and alcohol misuse
Described the characteristics of somebody with dependence or addiction
Identified how to recognise and respond to customers experiencing substance misuse – ‘Why they act the way they do and the best way we can work with them’
Identified what the law says with regard to alcohol and drugs
Explained cycles of change and the importance of understanding lapses and relapse
Explored ambivalence and sustain talk and how we can encourage engagement
Discussed the positive outcomes for people who change their drinking or drug misuse
Explored the support actions available to you
